Yes, if you have a lift in your premises which is used for business purposes, then you are required by law to ensure that the lift is maintained and serviced in accordance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). This requires lift examinations at regular intervals.
Does new lifting equipment need to be inspected?
Whether or not your lifting equipment is new, it will still need to be inspected on a regular basis in order to ensure that it remains compliant with LOLER. However, it is vital that new equipment, especially passenger lifts, have thorough lift examinations before they are put into use in order to ensure that they are safe to use and in line with risk assessment and work equipment regulations.
How often do LOLER inspections need to be carried out?
The frequency of LOLER inspections will depend on the type of equipment being used and the environment in which it is being used. However, as a general rule, all lifting equipment should be inspected at least once every 12 months For passenger lifts, inspections may vary.
What happens if my lifting equipment fails its LOLER inspection?
If your lifting equipment fails its LOLER inspection, you will be required to take it out of service immediately and have it repaired or replaced. Depending on the severity of the issue, you may also be required to notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of the problem.
